Too Much For Me

And another one. When I started writing this one, I knew the concept and the characters I was writing about, but I just couldn’t find my way to all of the lyrics within the week. I will keep working on it. Believe it or not, this song started from a blues riff with a free-styled lyric as I was trying to fill time as a hired musician in a BBQ joint. The blues riff faded away when I came up with the main guitar theme that I play in the intro and under the verses. The old lyrics faded away when a new chorus was formed. It’s obviously still in progress, so let me know what you think so far.

Here are my thoughts on the song concept: I think it’s easy for two people to be “in love” when all is good. I like the idea of two people who seem to be in love with each other just as much in times of frustration and don’t have any trouble speaking it out.

This was another “Mock-up Session” with Donnell like I talked about in the Been Watchin’ You post. It was really fun to try a bunch of different things and put a ton of instrumentation on this song just to see what it might sound like with a really big band. Donnell and I always joke about playing on Conan and this is one of those songs that would be fun to rock out on live television. (not to be delusional, just having fun dreaming.)

I realize that I want you to create your own mix tapes out of these basement demos and I can’t expect you to do that if I am posting scratch tracks. I would rather do my very best with these demos so they can actually exist as songs for you to enjoy for the year until the album is made. So, this one gets put on the list to get the vocals redone as well. Hit me with your comments and don’t hold back. You can click to read the lyrics I have so far.

Too Much For Me

Listen Now:

What’s with the folded arms across your chest
Finding a reason just to make a mess
Then you’re going home and talking to Jesus about every little detail
-

I like the way you walk away
When I somehow say those
Words that I can’t take back
You seem inclined to lose your mind
So I’ll be fine with every train that jumps the track
-

I hear you talk about
All the little things you can do without
-
-
-
-
Over and over I say

You’re too much for me (2x)
And I am not enough for you

And I follow the rabbit through the looking glass
I’m all in the moment so I don’t know I’m going mad
And the fall that I call freedom turns into the dream

  1. Another great Monday surprise! It’s different from what I usually expect from you, but I loved it! The guitar is amazing in it…can’t wait until you get the lyrics all together. Keep it up! :)

  2. This may come as a surprise, but I am a total and complete Donnell geek!! I rewound immediately to replay a couple of those bass licks. I also love the guitar work and I’m not really bothered by the lyrics being incomplete. I can’t tell what you’re saying half the time anyway. And the lyrics always find their way to the cool jam feel of these kind of tunes. What an interesting month of tunes and a great variety of songs going into your fourth month. My mixtape is my most played playlist at this time. Indicating that I am also a ginormous Jared Mahone fan!!! Keep me smiling.

  3. Aww man, this is mad phat!!! A great Blues Funky jam surprise! You really outdid yourself with this one. I actually liked it as it is. I know, you may think that this one is a “pre” version, but I like it alot. The only critique is to but more emotion in the bridge and the chorus, (see what I mean?) But a nice surprise nonetheless.

  4. Love the horn section in this one especially at the beginning. I know you don’t like the “incomplete” feeling of the lyrics not all being there, but maybe sometimes that’s ok? Maybe just doing licks…a la Jason Mraz? Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about…just thinking that just because there are no words there doesn’t mean you can’t capture the emotion. Besides, if the song is essentially about the drama of a relationship then perhaps it’s ok that the song is disjointed. ??? :)

  5. Alright…I’ve been wondering when you would post this song. I love the intro and all the magic within. Like the words you’ve come up with so far. Love the Alice in Wonderland surprise at the end. Only one comment and it’s about your vocals. It almost seems for some of the song you’re over enunciating your words, which makes it sound really white and sound trackish. I like when you really get in there and sing it up, like in the “you’re too much for me” section. Nice work though man!

  6. Love how this one starts. It is like the grand kickoff of a funky fresh parade of goodness.

My favorite part is the “I like that way that you walk away…” section. Makes me wanna dance!

Keep ‘em coming. You are doing such a great job. What a catalog!

  7. I really love the potenial this song has!! I have a feeling it’ll be best live. Groovy song with a great beat – can’t sit still while it’s playing!!

  8. I am yet to hear a song that I dont like. The guitar is awesome in this song. This song gives off a really cool, bluesy feel that makes you want to move to the beat. Awesome job this week.

  9. I love this one! I really like the intro and all the guitar. Fantastic job, yet again!

  10. Although I love what prhgvboxhoh said, I’m gonna have to add a little to the comment: aosidh sdf piojsodifyhwggwgg cowabunga bidda badda bing bong.

And also that I love this song. Unfortunately for the now-defunct Mr. Conan, this song will never ring from his stage…but there’s always Leno! You ever think of throwing some scat into a song, like as a mainstay, not just until you think of better lyrics? It might not be right for this song, but it’d be cool.

Oh, and I agree with Matt as well…not as much as I agree with my friend prhgvboxhoh, but I do agree with him nonetheless.

  11. This is so funky! I cannot wait to hear the final lyrics! It’s certainly one of my favorite guitar parts you’ve written! So glad you finally released this one! I’ve watched this video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD2d6UaHJYQ ) so many times just listening to this song before you changed it! I love what it evolved into!!!
