As much as I have been influenced by a variety of sources in music, I have also been influenced by a variety of sources as a songwriter. I can cite a list of key songs that connected with me in various ways and made me want to be a songwriter and believe it or not, some of those key songs are the themes of some of the family situation comedies that were on T.V. when I was growing up. Some of those songs, although sometimes just as cheesy as the shows themselves, were really well crafted.
I tried to write this song in that same flavor. Much like From: Joe To: Betsy, this really isn’t my style, but I wanted it to speak as if the song itself was written as a theme to a sit-com. In many ways, I think if my life was one of those goofy 80′s/90′s sit-coms, this would most definitely be the theme song. Picture the blond girl walking down the stairs, flipping her hair and flashing a toothy grin at the camera with her name fading in at the bottom of the screen.
The subject matter of the lyrics came after a really rough spot in my relationship with Kara. So, it may seem like just an attempt at word craft, but every lyric is as serious as I can be. It’s also a wink to Kara that I really do hear her when she brings up conversations about starting a family. Bonus points to anyone who can count how many show titles are mentioned or paid homage to throughout.
Kara and Me
Don’t know what could be for Kara and Me
Guess we’ll wait and see for Kara and Me
She said she doesn’t care
But I know that she’s been dreaming, planning
But it’s all up in the air
So I guess we’ll have to let it happen
There’s no way we can see whatever come
So come whatever we’ll never come undone
The scene’s changing
But it’s still our show
And I know it won’t be too long
Then this Full House will be a home
Don’t know what could be for Kara and Me
We got lost in our Friends
And it nearly made us Perfect Strangers
But that’s not how this season ends
‘Cause the Facts of Life are
Family Matters
Don’t we know there can be some Growing Pains
But I know we’ll spin off into a house with just one name
Where Just the Ten of Us remain
And with all the memories we’re making
They’ll play again in syndication
As we look back on Wonder Years
You know I’ll love you when you’re a Golden Girl
When our little girl or a Boy Meets World
When Good Times seem so far away
We’ll take it Step By Step and day by day
Believe it or not I’m walking on air
I never thought I would be so free
Living my life on a wing and a prayer
Who could it be? It’s Kara and Me

Nice. This actually does sound like a theme song, and all of the mentioned tv shows are just perfect! It kinda takes me back.
I thought the fade out was pretty funny too because you don’t hear that too much anymore.
Sounds like you are really branching out and trying some different styles. What a great challenge!
This is such a happy song! I love the TV shows mentioned and my favorite line of the song is “the scenes changing, but it’s still our show.” It’s awesome that it’s just about how in love you are and how things will come your way, but you’re always going to get through them together. Very good.
Ha! It does sound like a theme sound! Very creative way to use all the show titles….made me giggle!
How special to be able to write a song about the person you love and your life together! Also, a fun and healthy outlet for helping to get through “stuff.”
Very coincidental! I was just listiening to a bunch of old theme songs on youtube with my buddies last night! They are gonna freak when I show this to them. Loved loved it! ***** lol
The mention of all the old tv shows takes me back to being a kid and watching ‘Boy Meets World’, ‘Growing Pains’ and ‘Family Matters’. I think this is a great song.
I counted 362 show titles/homages. I may have missed a couple, though….how many are there? Come on, man, stop holding out on us!
Wait…I just listened again and got 397. I think I got ‘em all this time! YES!
And ditto on Kara’s fade-out comment.
I’m really digging this Scott character. Wait til you see what he writes about The Only One. Anyway, what I like about this song is that it was a Valentines gift for your sweetheart. And, I got to hear it early with one of my valentines. Keep up the good discipline.
the girls LOVE this song, because it says, “kara and me.”
they think it is kara and “them.”
