So, before we get into this week, did everyone see that Kelly commented on last week’s post! Crazy huh? We spoke through email for the first time since we were 15 (except, of course, that one time I ran into her at the mall in front of the Cinnabon). Turns out she is a great writer and pretty much puts me to shame so coming soon will be an update or follow up song and we’ll continue the story. Until then, there is this week. . .
I wanted to challenge myself and write a song from the perspective of a girl. The topic that I chose was dictated by how the tune made me feel. Looking back at it now, I realize how chauvinistic it might come off for a guy to write a song for a girl to sing about how her heart was broken by some dude. But, I wanted to talk again about the story of a relationship where the feelings weren’t mutual, like we touched on in a previous song Just Like You. This is obviously near the end of the relationship.
I don’t know how it came up so often, but I had a few conversations with friends this week about how relationships seems to end way before the actual break up. In this tune, the guy knows it’s over by his actions but has neglected to tell the girl or really even himself. She can see that his body is still around but his heart is somewhere else. It’s a painful thing that eventually has to end, but that time between it being over and it actually ending is the worst of it. If people would only communicate better. Hate to say it, but I’ve been on both ends of this scenario. Not pretty.
Now, I just have to find a girl to sing it. Maybe I’ll pitch it a little higher. Click the link at the bottom for the lyrics.
(updated post) I added a version of this song where my cousin Emily sang. We recorded it in California when I was out there playing shows. The song was a little too low for her range and she had just learned the tune that day so cut her a break. I thought it was good for a demo. She is very talented.
Already Gone
Already Gone (Emily)
And I know
That I’ve heard you say that name before
And I won’t
Say a word if it will be ignored
And I hope
You are closer than you seem
But I don’t
Want a promise you can’t keep
Already gone
And I don’t know what went wrong
And I know
That it’s your embrace around me tight
And I wont
Be the first of us to say good-night
‘Cause I hope
I am holding more than sand
And you heart
Is exactly where you stand
But you’re
Already gone
And I’m still here holding on
Holding on
(But not for long)
And I know
That the summer wind will bring the fall
And I won’t
Leave a note that just can’t say it all
And I hope
You are calling out my name
Hear your voice
As it echos back the same
‘Cause I’m
Already gone
Don’t look so surprised
I’m already gone
And I’m out here on my own

This is really great. I love this story, as it is something most people can relate to being on one side of it or the other. The last chorus makes it such a perfect switch as she decides to leave him before he can officially end it. Even though it is Jared singing it, you can hear the female character gain strength to overcome the situation throughout the song. Nicely done.
Another great Monday morning surprise for me.
I LOVE this song. As a whole, it tells a sad but true story that happens so many times. As well, I love the way the verses are written…”And I know…And I won’t…And I hope…” it’s unique and strong and I like it. Thanks for brightening my Monday morning!
Look dude, you know I’m a huge fan, right dawg? If you’re going to write a song from a girl’s perspective, why not have a girl sing it? That would be an interesting twist to the project, which is about writing songs, after all. I agree with Mike, I love the song, the hook, the guitar work and the way you are pushing the development of your craft and talent. YOU GO, GIRL!
Thanks for making the west coast a little less Monday-er.
Oops, sorry Mika. Misread the name. My bad.
LOVE IT! Maybe it’s because it’s something that is so easy to relate to… the end where you decided to change the reigns, where the girl ends up leaving. YES! Perfect! I want this on the CD
I have a few girls who would probably love to sing this, just because of the story behind it.
Great song man! I’d like to hear this on the cd!!!!!
definitely 2 thumbs up! this is a “strength”song. I love it! the lyrics are very real.
hmmm. a female singer with studio experience…hmmm.
WOW! I relate deeply to this one. Your same musical style, but a good switch in content. Nice…
Cool grove buddy! This is a love poem, especially about falling in love, in the first stages. Or at least what you may say say to them, because by the time you have your epiphany, she has already left and you love her even more. Man, I been to that bridge and back, beautiful man, beautiful!
